Are You Washing Your Face Correctly?

tips to proper skincare face washing

Though it’s something you do every day, you may be surprised to find that you’ve been doing it wrong! Here is the correct way to wash your face, removing impurities and leaving your skin balanced and refreshed.

First and foremost, its important to be using the right water temperature. Although hot water feels good, the heat will strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, leaving you dried out.

On the other hand, cold water can also irritate skin and lead to broken capillaries.

Using lukewarm water is the best practice to effectively cleanse your skin.

Though it seems like common sense, it is also critical to make sure that your hands are clean. If your goal is to remove dirt and oil from your face, it would be very counterproductive to use hands that are covered in dirt and oil, depositing it right back into your pores.

Remember to be gentle. Scrubbing harder doesn’t mean you are scrubbing better.

The most effective way to apply cleanser is to massage it gently into your skin in a circular motion, being sure to distribute the cleanser evenly over your entire face.

After you have finished washing, be sure to rinse skin thoroughly. Leaving cleanser residue and the grime that is removed on your skin will build up and clog pores which will not only lead to breakouts, but will also prevent your subsequent products from being absorbed, reducing their efficacy.

Once your face is thoroughly clean and well rinsed, pat it dry with a clean towel. Never rub or scrub it dry as this will irritate the skin.

Immediately apply a toner to return your skin to its natural pH balance so it is prepared to absorb the products that you put on after. Always finish your routine with a hydrating dose from your moisturizer to seal in moisture.

It is best to wash your face twice a day, in the morning and at night. Cleansing your face in the morning washes the sleep away and will provide a clean canvas for your other products. At night, it is important to wash off makeup and the dirt and grime of the day to keep your skin clear and healthy.

In fact, we recommend a double cleanse. Double cleansing is the best way to ensure that all impurities have been removed from the skin.

To do this, first cleanse with an oil cleanser such as the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil to thoroughly remove makeup and allow the secondary cleanse, with your regular Eminence cleanser, to deep clean pores and ensure that skin is truly free of impurities.

Without proper cleansing of the skin, build up occurs causing breakouts and dullness, and can even lead to premature aging. As stated earlier, it will also prevent your subsequent products from being absorbed into the skin.
